From Overwhelmed to Empowered: How the Principles of Stoicism and Spirituality Have Helped Me Navigate Some of Life's Challenges

As I continue my journey of personal and professional growth, I have found that the principles of stoicism and spirituality offer a powerful path towards self-awareness, connection to others, and effective leadership. Through my own experiences and exploration, I have learned to focus on what I can control, practice self-discipline and self-restraint, and cultivate gratitude and humility.

I realize now one of my personal missions is to bring peace and love to everyone around me. Through the practice of stoicism and spirituality, I have found that these principles have helped me become a better leader and a more compassionate person. This did not come easy nor was it always the case for me and I’m fortunate to be able to reflect now.

Last week, I had the opportunity to spend time in the Colorado Rocky Mountains with some of my family. As I gazed at the snow-covered mountains, trees, and the majestic Grand Lake, I was struck with awe by the sheer beauty of nature. It made me feel connected in another profound way and very grateful. The prior weekend, I also had the chance to spend time in magical Sedona, Arizona, a place that brought me close to nature and at the same time the world in a personal and profound way

.

My journey to Buddha's birthplace in Nepal last year with some YPO friends, was a profound and enlightening experience that reinforced the principles of stoicism and spirituality that I have been exploring. While in Nepal, I had the opportunity to sit in silence and prayer in the Japanese temple for Buddha, an experience that was both peaceful and transcendent, connecting me to the universe and the collective consciousness of humanity

.

Through this experience, I realized that stoicism and spirituality are not just philosophies of self-discipline and self-restraint, but also a path towards greater compassion and empathy towards others. The principles of stoicism teach us to focus on what we can control and let go of what we cannot, while spirituality reminds us of our interconnectedness with the world and others around us.

An example of how these principles have been applied in my life is during the holiday season's airline travel disruption. 10s of thousands of flights were cancelled leaving travelers nationwide stranded in many cases without their luggage (Southwest are you listening?). My family's plans were affected by the cancellations, and we had to adjust our plans and cancel one leg of our trip. Instead of becoming frustrated and overwhelmed, we relied on spiritual gratitude to help us navigate the situation. We recognized that the airline cancellations were beyond our control, and instead focused on what we could control - our own thoughts and actions. During this unexpected free time, we found joy and gratitude in the blessings of our own home and quality time with loved ones. We went on beach hikes, read, and wrote, appreciating the beauty and peace of our surroundings. Through this experience, I realized that stoicism and spirituality are not just abstract concepts, but practical tools for living a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

My friend's recent cancer diagnosis has also reminded me of the importance of living each day to the fullest, of being grateful for life's blessings, and of cherishing the time we have with loved ones. Their approach to the situation has been nothing other than heroic, brave, and stoic. While the news was shocking and devastating, they have approached it with a calm and rational mindset, focusing on what they can control and finding joy and gratitude in each day. I’m inspired by their example.

But as much as we may strive to live by the principles of stoicism and spirituality, sometimes life has a funny way of reminding us that we are not in control. Just when I thought I had everything under control, God would often remind me otherwise. And it was up to me to deal with the situation. It's a humbling experience, but it also reminds me of the importance of staying focused on what I can control and letting go of what I cannot.

My journey to Buddha's birthplace and the Japanese temple reinforced the principles of stoicism and spirituality and helped me to deepen my understanding of the power of these principles in our everyday lives. By focusing on what we can control, practicing self-discipline and self-restraint, cultivating gratitude and humility, recognizing our interconnectedness with the world, appreciating the beauty of nature, and spreading peace and love to those around us, I know I can become more a compassionate and effective leader, and live a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
